So….. you ask, how many Lawyers are there in Congress?

Good Question. I don’t know, but I am trying to find out. So…..I am starting with the US Senate.

Using this database, Congress Merge, I have researched the first 50 US Senators so far.

What did I find?

There is only One Lawyer in the first 50 US Senators! Well, there is only one who lists their profession as Lawyer. But….

There are another 27 who list their profession as Attorney or Soliciter! Plus, there are 3 more with Law Degrees who list their profession as “Public Official”. So that’s 31 out of the first 50 Senators with Law degrees or 62%! With less than 1% of Americans having Law Degrees, I personally think the legal profession is a little over represented in the US Senate. BTW, if anybody can find out the real number of Lawyers in America, let me know. For some reason the ABA doesn’t publish that fact.

We also have 2 Career Social Workers, Barbara Mikulski of MD & Debbie A. Stabenow of MI.

Well, I have 50 more to go. So far I am not a happy camper about what I have found. Obviously, having worked for a living is not an asset to becoming a US Senator. No wonder they are so free with our money.
